Cryosurgery is a gentle, minimally invasive way to treat certain skin conditions and small growths using controlled cold therapy.

At Animal Hospital of Nicholasville, we use this technique to safely and effectively remove select masses and treat conditions like distichiasis (abnormal eyelashes), often without the need for traditional surgery.

A Simpler, Less Stressful Option

One of the biggest advantages of cryosurgery is how easy it can be on both pets and their owners.

In many cases, the procedure:

  • Does not require general anesthesia

  • Can be performed during a regular office visit

  • Is quick, with minimal discomfort

  • Requires little to no downtime

A specialized handheld device is used to apply a precise burst of cold (typically nitrous oxide) directly to the affected tissue, destroying abnormal cells while preserving the surrounding healthy tissue.

When Is Cryosurgery a Good Option?

Cryosurgery is often recommended for:

  • Small skin masses or benign growths

  • Certain eyelid conditions like distichiasis

  • Select lesions where a less invasive approach is appropriate

During your pet’s exam, we’ll determine whether this is the right option or if a more traditional surgical approach would provide better results.

Effective Care Without the Complexity

Because cryosurgery typically does not require full anesthesia or an operating room setup, it can be a more affordable and convenient option compared to traditional surgery—while still delivering excellent results in the right cases.

When to Have a Growth Checked

If you notice a new lump, bump, or change in your pet’s skin, it’s always worth having it evaluated. Early assessment allows us to determine the best approach—whether that’s monitoring, cryosurgery, or another form of treatment.
